Colour of Time Parade at Womadelaide 2015
An extremely colourful experience at Womadelaide as Artonik presented a reinvention of India’s traditional Holi festival. The Colour of Time parade featured vibrant colour powder that was thrown into the air to music and gathered on all within range.
More details available at the Artonik website.
A surprise highlight for Womadelaide 2015. Jimbanai, from South Korea, utilise traditional classical instruments with rock staples and deliver music from both extremes.
Have a look and listen to them on the Womadelaide website.
A unique dance performance took place outside the Samstag Museum of Art, City West Campus on Thursday March 5th, for Do it Adelaide and Art After Dark West End. As the sun was setting Natalie Allen, of Daniel Jaber and Dancers, explored the space from North Terrace moving into the campus beyond the full depth of the museum. Curious passers-by paused or scurried around the edges of the performance that continued for about an hour.
Special thanks should go to the gentleman in the background for getting into the spirit of the event.
More from Backstage Pass
As it is Festival season again here in Adelaide I had a look back at a range of photographs I took in the lead up to the Backstage Pass exhibition which opened in February 2013. I have selected ten photographs that have not been displayed before and they were taken in four different theatres at various times of the year.
Here are a couple of examples, but all ten are presented with some descriptive notes on the More from Backstage Pass page.
Brink Productions – World Premiere of Land and Sea
I followed the production development of the world premiere season of Land and Sea by Brink Productions from the early meetings through various phases including the review of scale models of the set, costume manufacture, rehearsals in a dance studio, bump-in, set construction and dress rehearsals.
Due to an extraordinary set design and audience experience it was not possible to use a conventional foyer display to exhibit the final collection of photographs as this would spoil the impact. Video projection in the foyer after the performance was considered the safest solution to keep the secrets in-house and still tell the story of the development of the production. The use of text in the images was necessary as it was not appropriate to have a soundtrack for the video in a noisy foyer after the performance.
As there are no plans to stage the production again in the near future I have been given the all clear to display a selection of images online for the first time.
Click on the Brink Productions under the Exhibitions tab above or click here to see some of the photographs.
Festival State exhibition
As we approach another summer of festivals in Adelaide I had a look back over an old exhibition of mine and have just added a specific gallery to this website.
For the South Australian Living Artists Festival (SALA) in 2006 I staged my first solo exhibition at the Austral Hotel in Rundle Street Adelaide.
I had spent the previous summer going to a selection of the major festivals and events in Adelaide. This included the Tour Down Under cycling event, Adelaide Fringe Festival, Adelaide Festival of Arts, Womadelaide and the Clipsal 500 car race.
All photographs are black and white and one sample is below. Access the gallery via the Exhibitions tab or click here.
Boats in Indonesia
On a recent trip to Indonesia I was drawn to the activity of small boats that circulated the islands. Delivering goods or people. As an industry or as a play thing, there was an ever changing landscape of boats on and off the water. Here are a few examples.

Rehearsals for Kiss of the Chicken King by Oscar McLennan
The Adelaide Festival of Arts recently presented the world premiere of The Kiss of the Chicken King by Oscar McLennan. I had the opportunity to go to a rehearsal a few days before the opening night on March 1st, 2014 and here is Oscar in action with a mirror and below with Martin Tourish who also played with Altan in Adelaide on their Australian tour.
Sessions Adelaide 2014
As the temperatures soared into the mid 40’s outside it was a relief to find that the air-conditioning was still working fine in the Space Theatre. Here are a couple of smartphone shots of the concert by Fefe on Wednesday January 15.
Womadelaide 2014
While Womad has always been a unique annual offering for the ears it is also a treat for the eyes with the parkland setting playing host to colourful musicians and audiences. The full program is online now at the www.womadelaide.com.au.
SALA Retrospective
As this Long Live the Maj exhibition has come to an end I thought I would take a look back at an earlier SALA exhibition I presented at Jolleys Boathouse Restaurant in August 2007.
This was also documentary style, behind the scenes at the restaurant. I have presented a collection of the exhibition photographs as well as previously unseen images on a dedicated page.
SA Life video
